Chapter 16 The Investigation

SSA Frank Wallace had over thirty years’ experience in the FBI, and he had been a key part of solving hundreds of cases, from murder and kidnapping to bank robberies, white collar crime, and terrorism. He was aware that in the Bureau he was known as Bull Dog because once he got hold of something, he never let go. He didn’t mind. In fact, he liked the nickname his fellow agents had honored him with early in his career and stuck with him throughout the decades and wherever he went. He enjoyed working cases that baffled other agents, investigators, and associates who had given up on solving them and were all dumbfounded when he closed the cases with an arrest or two. It gave him great satisfaction.

Frank was proud that other agents looked up to him thanks to his calming influence in life or death situations, and his dry, understated humor around the office. He always tried to see things from an out-of-the-box perspective he knew was uncommon by traditional FBI standards. His colleagues found it refreshing, and newer agents often came to him when they were stumped by a case. He gave credit where it was due, and even after being promoted up the ranks he never sought the spotlight. Working cases, he preferred to hand over the lead to younger agents to give them field experience, though he was always there to help guide them.

Frank had modeled his style of leadership after his own personal hero, Teddy Roosevelt, Jr., who’d bravely led his men onto the Normandy beaches on D-Day, 1944. Roosevelt was the only general to hit the beach in the first landing wave, and the oldest man in the invasion. He’d always remained calm, inspiring confidence in his men with the authority and love of a father. Frank had been a captain in the Marines as a younger man, serving in Panama and Desert Storm, and knew how important it was to be a steady and fair leader.

But enough was enough. In one year he was finally retiring after thirty-four years on the job. He’d been wounded once in a shootout, and won the Medal of Valor twice. He’d given the FBI his all, and it was time to hang up the badge. His colleagues had all told him they were really going to miss him. He’d miss them, too, but he was looking forward to working on his vegetable garden and going fishing. See his son more often. Maybe do a bit of travelling with his wife, whom he loved dearly but had sometimes neglected badly due to his job.

But first he had to crack this new international case that Mike Nolan had dropped in his lap.

After his meeting with Nolan yesterday, Frank had gotten right on his computer and began to work. He’d started methodically with the information that Nolan had provided—which was all he had to go on since Mike was the only source and witness to Wang Ping’s murder in Beijing.
