Chapter fifteen
The Following Fog
Oct 25, 2007
It was nearing dusk, and Hannah had gone for a walk in the woods to clear her head after another day of poring over the library books. On her way there, she had stopped to watch the search boats that were still circling the island. While in the woods, she sat down on a fallen tree trunk to think. As she sat there looking about, the air began to thickenâfirst subtly, as if condensation was building up on her eyes like a film, then like a soft glow that seemed to gather in the air. It became thicker, forming around the tree trunks and between the leaves. The soothing sound of evening crickets hummed around her, and lightning bugs lit up the canopy of trees above her head.
As the fog started to surround her like a soft blanket, Hannah remembered Old Man Adams telling her on the ferry how important the fog was, that it allowed things unseen to be seen. And that when it rolled in, the veil it created that seemed to others to shroud, or hide, our world, in truth made other worlds more visible.
She ran her hands around in the fog and her fingertips touched leaves. She realized these were maple leaves. Of course they wereâit was Maple Hollow, after all. There were hundreds if not thousands of maple trees all over the island. Hannah noticed that the bark below her was growing wet, and she decided she better head back.
As she neared the manor, the fog almost seemed to follow her. She felt a strong sense that perhaps there was something she was missing. Something she should be able to see, but had not. Something that could help her find Jewelia, if only it would reveal itself to her, or if only she knew where to look for the portal. She was not a catâso did pumpkins hold that same magick for her? She needed to see what could not be seen. But how?
When Hannah entered the manor, she heard something that sounded like it was coming from the library. The walls echoed the whisper of a woman humming a soft tune. As she grew closer to the stairs, the sound faded more and more, until there was total silence when she touched the door to the library.
She entered the hallway, and the heavy door slammed behind her, giving her a start. A book dislodged from a bookshelf in the library and fell to the floor, landing open and face down. Hannah walked over and picked it up.
Magick, it read, is the ritualized effort to align oneself with natural forces in the world in order to manifest an intention. It is the process through which one raises perceptions and ultimately finds the true destined path. Hannah thought this made sense. But she realized it was a different explanation than sheâd ever heard before. This magick wasnât the rabbit-out-of-the-hat type stuff sheâd seen at carnivals. This was more spiritual, more personal, more authentic, like the magick of the island.
