CHAPTER 2

SASKIA

Saskia held her legs still as she sat in the corridor with the other candidates. At the Guild warehouse she always lounged about on seats and swung her feet back and forth as carelessly as she liked, but even if she’d just ruined her shot at this job, she still had a part to play. Respectable servants never fidgeted, according to Renkah. Saskia's heart sank as she imagined having to look her instructor in the eye and tell her that all her hard work—the hours of careful focus and patience as she corrected Saskia’s blunders—had been for nothing.

It didn’t matter that Saskia had at least been able to convince the butler and housekeeper she was one of them. This enterprise was over quicker than it had started, and that was her fault. Trying to be clever, as usual. If she’d just kept her mouth shut… She scanned the rows of young women who also sat unnaturally straight on either side of her and wondered which of them would win the coveted position.

Maybe this was how things were meant to be. After all, did she really think she could pull off something like this? That she could fool not just the human servants but the elves themselves, striking a blow against them in retribution for what they’d done to the humans of this city, to Saskia’s sister? That was a child’s dream—as foolish as wishing for the moon. They were too powerful for that, and Saskia too insignificant.

A candidate returned from her interview and took the seat beside Saskia, while another was called forth. The neighbor of the returning woman shifted in her seat and, to Saskia’s surprise, nudged the other girl.

“How did it go?”

“Fine. I fluffed the question about silver polish, though.”

“But we went over that right before we came,” the other chided.

“Don’t remind me.” Saskia watched them carefully and noted a family resemblance, the same short nose and round faces. Sisters, probably—the real kind, not ones made in circumstance like her and Trin.

“You went in right after her, so I wouldn’t panic too much.”

“Gosh, where did she get that dress? A museum?”

They were whispering, but Saskia could still make out who they were talking about—a woman sat on the other side of the corridor. Her dress was a faded gray rather than the crisp black the others wore, and Saskia noticed that her cuffs were worn, though not quite fraying. The difference wasn’t extreme. Her hair was still neatly pinned, and she looked well fed. She was surely better off than Saskia had ever been, but the others were happily judging her. Meanwhile, Saskia had somehow met their standards. She looked down at her pleated skirts. On the surface she fitted in much better here than the other young woman. But that just went to show what nonsense it all was, didn’t it?

The minutes ticked by and Saskia thought about getting up and leaving rather than wasting another moment in this torture. She was just considering if she
