Chapter 34

Passing the Time as we Wait

Monroe carried me down to the library (the sweetheart). Diogenes handed me a drink while Ash handed one to Monroe. Mars looked at me in surprise. I smiled as much as my lips would allow. I’m guessing that someone had informed the others how it was because their faces betrayed no alarm at my apparent injuries. Donnelly kissed my cheek and caught me up on the plan, “We’ve sent for Medea. We want her to call to Lucinda and mediate. We’re still unsure where he put Rachel but are hopeful that Medea can help us figure it out.”

I knew exactly where Rachel was. I crooked a finger at Mansfield. She came to me and I took Harlow from her arms and held her. She grabbed at my swollen lip (ouch). “Mansfield, think about it. What precious thing did your Grandda bring back with him from Colombia?”

She looked puzzled. Monroe laughed as he scooped up Harlow and said, “Don’t worry; Mommy will see it in a minute…”

She saw and exclaimed, “My green rock, the one you said was an emerald!” She hugged me and I whimpered in pain. She ran up to her room and returned shortly with the emerald. She told the others how her grandda had brought the pretty rock from Colombia and given it to her when she had admired it.

I was nodding off and Mars suggested he take me upstairs to rest until Medea arrived. Monroe said that that was an excellent idea and handed me off; I didn’t get a vote apparently. Nanu guffawed at the expression on my face. Monroe came to my side, “Hey, I want to take Dolph for a ride on the BMX, to clear his head. Do you mind?” I told him he was sweet and he led Dolph away. Di and Ash were quick to seize an advantage and sandwiched Nanu between them; I knew what they’d be doing while they waited for Medea.

Mars took me to his room and looked at me, waiting my explanation. So, I explained to him that when Monroe went into the past and encountered too much negativity, he had to vent, to rage until he was emptied of it. I explained that I was a very willing participant in the process. I said that I hoped that he wouldn’t judge Monroe. He kissed me softly, “It’s not Monroe that needs this as much as it is you; is that not true?”

I looked at him, surprised. “How do you know this?”

“I was once as you, in love, deeply and helplessly in love, with a man such as Monroe. I took his anger from him and reveled in it. He went from me after a particularly brutal session…that man broke my heart far worse than he had broken my body. I was alone for many years after he left me, hoping that he would return to me, but though I begged, he refused to do so.” I wiped away the tears that ran down his handsome face.
