After dinner that night, Lorrin dropped by her room to take her somewhere they could train. True to her word, Kalla had sent some clothes up to her room, which Elinta found waiting for her on her bed. From these, she’d changed into a loose pair of pants that looked easy to move in and a grey cotton shirt. Now, she walked beside Lorrin as he led her down the hall outside her room.

“Where are we going?” she asked, eyes roaming the artwork strung along the walls showing previous royals, their families, or locations across Eldras. She recognised the White Mountains in one painting, their peaks hiding in a low cloud line.

“There’s a couple of private rooms we use for training on this floor. I thought we’d go there instead of the more public ones on the top floor.” That sounded good to her.

A few minutes later, Lorrin was leading her into a private room off a small corridor that connected to the main one on that side of the palace. It was slightly bigger than her bedroom and someone had covered the stone floor in mats that sunk ever-so-slightly under her feet as she walked in. A door sat in the wall in the corner, which she supposed led to a storage room.

“Here we are,” Lorrin said, stretching out his arms.

Nerves tugged at her stomach, a feeling that was instantly mirrored by Zhayra. Not for the first time, she wondered how the dragon was doing by herself and whether she was just responding to Elinta’s emotions, or something was happening where she was to make her feel that way too. If only there was some way to tell. Something else to practice, Elinta thought, then looked around the room again.

“It’s great,” she said to Lorrin, thinking how empty the little corridor had been. The likelihood of someone walking in on them was slim. Lorrin rolled up his sleeves and gestured for her to move into the centre of the room.

“Let’s go over what we’ve already done first, and we’ll go from there,” he said, holding up his hands as a target. Elinta punched his palms in time to his count, then swapped to a jab-punch combination. Occasionally, he corrected her stance or told her to turn her hip into it more, but already she could see improvement since that first session by the lake. She grinned and immediately felt Zhayra’s mood lighten, once more mirroring her, confirming the dragon did respond to her.

They moved on to some kicks, and her grin widened as Lorrin taught her more variations. She loved it. After an hour, Lorrin told her to stop and jogged over to the other door. He ducked into the room beyond, and she tilted her head, wondering what was in there. Her question was answered when he emerged again, a wooden sword in his hand.

She watched him part in anticipation, part dread. Surely, she wasn’t ready for that? She’d hardly thought about training with a sword, even if she’d secretly hoped he’d teach her some basics.
