CHAPTER SIX

Dion was trying to handle this, but his dragon was not pleased with how the predators looked at him and his mate. If anyone made a move toward Ronin, his dragon would react. He knew it in his bones and tried to suppress the threatening storm that was in his soul. Holding Ronin’s hand helped and soothed him, but the situation made relaxing impossible.

Master DuCane was extremely savage, even in his silence and scrutiny. Dion would not give in. He would not bow to this man, no matter how strong or intimidating. Men like Louis DuCane could not be trusted. They were powerful, wealthy, with connections everywhere, and always out for their own interests.

He was inclined to give him a chance based on Ronin's endorsement, but he feared making a mistake. If he made a mistake, he and Pete would never escape a man like DuCane the researchers were slack in their security and leadership, but DuCane was neither.

He looked up at Ronin, searched for his needed support, and found it. This relationship was unexpected but touched him in every part of his being. As much as he distrusted DuCane for being a powerful paranormal, he had full confidence in Ronin even though he was also a very powerful paranormal. He was a man who could withstand dragon fire and was built for war, and yet Dion felt the safest in his proximity. The closer, the better.

It was a positive gesture to release Pete from the cuffs, so Dion needed to reciprocate by giving him the information he requested. Ronin had stated that DuCane would help them destroy those who captured them and that any research facility that was capturing paranormals needed to be neutralized.

Dion held tight to Ronin and began to describe the memories of his capture and captivity. He figured that he must have appeared calm enough when it was suggested that they return inside. His dragon was taking a step back, no longer on alert but ready to react if things changed.

"I will not shift as long as you don't threaten me, Pete or Ronin." He told them, and Master DuCane nodded. He did not comment, but the intense scrutiny remained. Everyone took a seat except for the security people at the doors and the two hellhounds. Pete moved closer to them, sitting not far from Dion. From this point on, the atmosphere lightened, and even the hellhounds stepped back, moving to stand with the others by the door directly behind them.

Between them, he and Pete shared everything they could remember about the people and the place, every detail including the dirty fingernails of the man the others had referred to as boss.

"I'd like for my doctors to check you both out and determine what they were testing and perhaps what drugs they were giving you. It is for your own welfare that we make sure they did nothing that might affect either of you long-term." The offer made sense, but having another technician check them over might prove difficult.
