Janet woke up to another warm and sunny day. “What are we going to do with our morning?” she asked Edward as she sat up in the bed.

“Maybe we should see what the grocery shop behind the community centre actually offers.”

“I did think that maybe we should get some of the lottery tickets that Hattie mentioned. I know we don’t need money, but a few million dollars extra might be nice.”

Edward laughed. “We’ll get some lottery tickets then, along with whatever else looks interesting.”

They took their time getting ready for the day. Janet had bought three different boxes of cereal to try, so she selected a box at random and poured herself a bowl.

“It’s very sweet,” she gasped after her first bite.

“American cereals are sweetened more than ours,” Edward told her. “You’d notice the difference even if you bought the exact same cereal that you eat at home.”

Janet took two more bites before she gave up. “I can’t eat this,” she said. “I think I’ll just have some toast.”

After they’d both had toast and fruit and coffee, they walked over to the grocery shop.

“My goodness, you two walk everywhere, don’t you?” a voice said as they entered the shop.

Janet looked at Patricia in surprise. “Our house is only a short distance away.”

“Americans don’t walk,” Patricia replied. “And you were out walking for hours yesterday as well.”

“We both enjoyed strolling around the neighbourhood,” Edward told her. “We’ll probably do it every day while we’re here.”

Patricia shook her head and muttered something that Janet hoped she’d misheard.

“There are sidewalks,” Edward pointed out.

“If you need help finding anything, let me know,” Patricia replied before she sat down behind the counter and opened a magazine.

Janet looked at Edward and raised an eyebrow. He shrugged and then turned and began to walk up and down the short aisles.

“I thought you were the site manager,” Janet said as she walked closer to the counter.

Patricia looked up and then sighed. “I am the site manager.”

“And the grocery shop manager?” Janet asked.

“Not at all. Unfortunately, we’re having trouble finding a reliable store manager. While we’re looking, everyone is taking a turn behind the counter in here,” Patricia explained.

“Of course, you’re still very young, but do you think you’ll retire to somewhere similar to Sunshine Sunset Acres when you reach retirement age?” Janet asked.

“I’ve no idea,” Patricia said flatly.

“Have you always lived in Florida? I hope that isn’t a nosy question, but this is the first US state that I’ve visited, and I hope to see a lot more of the country over time. Everyone says that Florida is the place to go when you want to retire, though. Is it just because the weather is so nice?”

Patricia shrugged. “I was born and raised in Florida. I’ve never lived anywhere else.”

“What about your husband? Or are you not married? You and Olga have different surnames, even though she isn’t Olga Doyle, so I assumed that you were married, but I could be wrong.” Janet stopped and took a deep breath.
