TWENTY-FOUR
It was hard to believe Iâd spent close to three hours with Martin. I texted Shannon and told her I was headed home. GiggiFi was already on low staff for the day due to Shannonâs death. Only a few necessary people walked the halls for support with a few working remotely to assist with any issues, and everyone knew I wouldnât be in.
To my surprise, Shannon replied. Sheâd taken the day off as well.
Upon my arrival, she wasnât easy to find in the house. I finally found her working out in the basement.
She was going strong on the elliptical as I came down the stairs and would not make eye contact with me. She had headphones in, so talking to her at that moment was futile.
I came around to the front of the machine and laid my hands on the front of it. Her cold eyes looked at me as her legs stopped moving. She pulled her earbuds out and asked how my meeting with Martin went.
Her question came out with such venom, it was clear she still had zero compassion for my situation.
âI told him everything, even the door.â
âSeriously?â she questioned. âHeâs an attorney, heâs pretty good at calling out bullshit. Especially yours.â
âThat stung,â I admitted with a small grin trying to soften her. âHe did bring up an interesting point though.
âWhatâs that?â
âIf Iâm here, where is your Max?â
She looked a bit confused, probably much like I had been when Martin said it to me.
âIâm standing in front of you, but where is your Max?â I tried to explain. âDid our conscious minds, our spirits, change bodies? Or am I here, in a world I donât know, with my own body, and if so, I think we have to assume he changed realities too or youâd be seeing two of us throughout the day.â
I could tell she got it, but didnât really know how to respond.
âHe suggested I talk to Dr. Lucas about getting my medical records.â
âWhatâs that going to do?â
âIn theory, it could at least provide a glimmer of evidence that something is different with me. Maybe enough to get... well... you to believe me,â I inflicted a bit of a question as I spoke. Plus if I needed anyone in my corner, it was Shannon.
âA lot of what youâve said in the last 72 hours is hard to believe Max. Iâm not sure even that would convince me.â
âHumor me, what physically was different about your Max than me,â I struggled to swallow as those words left my mouth. Comprehending what exactly my situation was, meant we both cheated, on each other, with each other. I wasnât sure Jerry Springer would be able to handle that type of foursome. âWe were intimate the other night. Did you notice anything different about me from your Max?â
âWhat?â she was now off the elliptical, wiping the sweat from her face and shoulders. Her question was wrapped in feistiness.
âLike my left foot,â I tried to explain. âWhen I broke it, I got stitches.
