Chapter fourteen

Diwan

Muhammad

When the Dey invites me to attend the Diwan, my mind goes without summons to Abdullah Dindar and his daughter and, thence, to my bride, Lalla Hurriya. It is nearing midafternoon and I desperately want news of the hammam. I understand that nothing is likely to have occurred there today. Instead, the action, if there is to be action, will take place at Ayn Taya on the arrival of Commander Shamshir and his troops. I walk with Caid Jafar from the Throne Room to the mosque at the palace gates for the Asr prayer with thoughts of possible outcomes at Ayn Taya buzzing through my mind like bees in their hive. As we are removing our sandals before entering the mosque, Caid Jafar puts his hand on my shoulder.

“Take heart, lad. This Kherrouba business, I know, troubles you like no other. I hope you were able to sleep last night. I’d hate for those waking visions to return to haunt you the way they did last year.”

“That’s in the past, Sidi. But no. I am troubled, certainly, though I slept last night and hope to again. I hate to be away when such momentous matters are afoot. Then there’s the boy to see. Y’Allah, what sort of law gives license to one human to own another? And then to be able to dispose of his ‘property’ in whatever manner he wishes?”

“I understand. But come now. It’s time to leave all worldly thoughts behind, if only for a few minutes. It’s one of the greatest blessings the Almighty has given us, these moments of respite. There will be time enough to worry when the prayer is finished!”
