CHAPTER FIFTY-ONE

October 21, 2006

This time Angel could’ve passed a traveling circus or Beyoncé herself and she wouldn’t have paused for even a second. She jogged, which gave the added benefit of keeping her warm. The thin white cotton blouse and pleated skirt were no match for an October wind. Inside Jimmy’s Gas & Go she dashed back and forth, grabbing Funions, Little Debbies, and milk. Visions of Bud, leather collar around his neck, toes barely touching the floor, propelled her. If Bud died because of her, she might as well die too. She would die, too.

Angel got into line behind a young woman with pink hair and a pierced eyebrow. Everything about her was round. Her face, her belly, her butt, her breasts, her blue eyes, the O her lips made under dark red lipstick. She wasn’t in a hurry. Angel was.

“You think those,” the clerk nodded at a couple of bright blue envelopes poking out of the woman’s purse, “are a better deal than renting movies from a video store?”

The woman grinned as she handed over bills for gas and a Diet Coke. “No question! If I space out, I don’t have to pay another few bucks every day I’m late. And I get what I want more often.” She winked at him. “It’s always good to get what you want, right?”

“Always!” The clerk winked back and kept an eye on her backside as the woman headed out the door. “Come back soon!”

Angel pushed the milk, donuts, and chips across the counter, willing him to move faster, but at the same time very curious. “What were you talking about?”

“Movies by Mail. The video service.” He said as if she were an alien who’d just landed. He tallied up her items and accepted her money.

Angel cocked her head and ignored the impatient man tapping his foot behind her.

“Everyone knows about it. Look at your neighbors’ mailboxes and I bet you’ll see blue envelopes in nearly every one. I clip mine to my mailbox so my mail chick knows I have outgoing. I hardly ever send mail, so she wouldn’t know otherwise.”

Angel grunted. The guy liked to talk! “But the movies?”

“Oh, yeah. You sign up on a computer and tell Movies by Mail what you want to watch. Then they mail the DVDs to your house. When you’re done watching ‘em, you stick them in the same blue envelope they came in. Put ‘em in your mailbox, and the postman picks them up and they go right back to the shipping center for the next guy. It’s pretty slick. Doesn’t work for me because I can watch ten movies a day...”

He kept talking but Angel stopped listening. There was something... something... she needed quiet time to think. This was important. But right now, she had to run.
