“Did Nick like his helmet?” Katy asked, perching on the back of the couch and peering over my shoulder as I went through job listings on the tablet with Mike. Mike was trans, new to New York City, and was struggling to make it without family backup. With the help of a clinic working with Rainbow House, he’d been able to start on testosterone, and he was anxious to get a job so he could begin to save money for his transition.

Katy had been at the center for over a year, having arrived around the time I’d started working there. I’d helped her get a job as a receptionist at a bank, and she was now being trained in the personnel department. I was proud of her.

“He loved it,” I told her. “All those gems knocked him out.”

“Really? I hoped he’d like it, the way you described him to me.”

“He definitely loves anything sparkly.” I stopped scrolling. “What about cleaning a church?” I asked Mike. “It’s part time, but it’s something.”

“I could do that,” Mike said, voice soft. He sat tensely beside me on the couch, hands clenched in his lap. “I’ll do anything but work with food. Too many allergies.”

“Gotcha. Let’s see if we can find anything full time first.” I continued down the list.

“When are you going to bring Nick to meet us?” Katy asked. “I’ll be moving out soon.”

“He’s stopping by at lunch today.” I hadn’t seen him since Sunday morning. The night before had been one of my “on” nights at the center.

“Great! I’ll make sure I’m here. My cab’s outside.” She headed for the door. “Don’t let him leave until I meet him!”

I promised her I wouldn’t.

“Nick your boyfriend?” Mike asked, and I turned to him. Shy pale blue eyes studied me from beneath long auburn lashes.

“Yeah.” I went back to scrolling through the list of jobs.

“Things serious between you two?”

I shrugged. Things between me and Nick felt real, but I had remind myself that we were goofing off. One of these days he was going to call it quits with me. I didn’t want to say that out loud though.

“I’ve never been with a guy,” Mike said quietly, and I realized he needed to talk more than he needed my help finding a job. I set the tablet on the side table and turned to face him.

“How old are you?”

“Twenty-six.”

“Plenty of time,” I said. “Look at me, I’m an old man over forty and still haven’t settled down.”

“Why haven’t you?”

I winked at him. “Too busy having fun.” Yeah. Right. That used to be true. I didn’t know what I was doing anymore. “Do you want to meet someone?”

Mike looked around the room as though measuring it somehow.

“I feel safe here. It’s been a while since I felt that. I think—I think I might be ready soon, but not yet.”

“Well, when you’re ready, say the word. I know all the fun places to go.”

Mike’s naturally light skin turned pink. “I don’t think that’s for me.”

“What, having fun?” I grinned at him.
