Chapter 19

“Vivi, why did you come home so early?” her mother asked her when she entered.

“Today… mom, today we were given a day off, as we have just returned from the business trip, so everyone went home,” she lied before she could think. She hated to lie to her mother but confessing the real reason why she was at home so early was beyond her abilities. She preferred to keep her mother in the shadows, not enabling her to know the truth. Knowing what had happened in the office would only make her worry a lot about her daughter, and Vivienne didn’t want her mother to suffer.

She went into the bathroom to take a shower and to get ready for the evening.

“Vivi, are you going somewhere?” her mother asked, seeing that Vivienne was picking something to wear, standing in front of her wardrobe.

“Oh, yes, mom, Mike invited me to have a cup of coffee with him,” Vivienne said, sitting on her bed, hugging her only pair of jeans and a red blouse, which she had bought a week ago while it was on sale.

“Who’s Mike?”

“He’s the head of the design department. And he seems to be a nice guy.”

“Jacob also seemed to be a nice guy, Vivi,” her mother said. “Just be careful, okay?”

“Yes, mom, thank you,” Vivienne said, as she came forward to hug her mother tightly. “Thanks for worrying about me.”

“There’s no other way, I’m your mom,” she said, laughing.

Vivienne was already ready to go. She applied some makeup and looked at her reflection closely. Her curly long blond hair was shiny and beautiful, and her bright blue eyes were excited and sparkling in anticipation. A date with the most handsome guy in the office…

“Bye, mom,” she hugged her mother and left the house. Going downtown by bus again was tiring, but it was worth it.

Michael was standing in front of the café, as handsome as before. His blue eyes lingered on hers for a few seconds, as he smiled at her. Those were the sweetest moments for Vivienne, as she felt she was melting in his eyes.

“Shall we go inside?” He said gently, touching her arm. She nodded, letting him lead her inside the café. It was a pleasant place to be, with casual furniture and staff.

“What kind of coffee would you like, Vivi?” Michael asked. “I’ll take a cappuccino.”

“Yes, me, too.”

“Two cappuccinos and sweets assortment, please,” he told the waiter. “So, Vivi, how was the business trip?” he asked when the waiter took the notes and went.

“It was wonderful, truly,” Vivienne said, getting excited. “I’d never been to Barcelona before. And I’d never been present to a real poker tournament. It was magical.”

“I’m glad for you. Do you like it in our office? Is everything all right?”

Vivienne looked at him. Did he know about Robert and her? Surely, he would know. Or at least he would suspect. She remembered Patricia’s words when she said that everybody suspected everybody. But why was he asking her? Maybe he didn’t even know anything, and just wanted to chat?
