Marjorie was up early the next morning and set off on a brief meander around the resort. She made her way down towards the sea and wandered around for a while. She was thinking about the arguing couple from the night before and stood at the water’s edge, the waves lapping gently over her bare feet. Suddenly, she smiled.

She headed back towards the hotel and stopped briefly in front of the hut she’d seen the arguing man enter. She made a mental note of the number and then headed on to reception. She was greeted by a smiling young woman, dressed in the obligatory pink polo shirt.

‘Good morning. How can I help?’

‘Good morning,’ said Marjorie, affecting a slight Dowager Duchess accent. ‘I chatted briefly with one of your other guests at the pool yesterday and afterwards I realised he’d left his book behind.’

‘Okay. Would you like me to give it back to him?’

‘Oh no, I don’t want to be a nuisance, I can do it. In any case, he and his wife are actually my next door neighbours, in hut number six I think. All I wanted to know was their name, please. I do think it’s so important to be polite, don’t you?’

This complete pack of lies seemed to have exactly the desired effect on the receptionist. Without a second thought, she tapped away on her computer and peered at the screen.

‘Of course . . . here we are . . . hut number six . . .’

She grabbed a notepad and wrote the names down, reading from the screen. She tore off the page and handed it to Marjorie.

‘Glad to be of assistance.’

Marjorie made her way to breakfast where she found Claude waiting for her. She helped herself to a bowl of fresh tropical fruit and yoghurt and sat down. She looked extremely pleased with herself.

‘I’ve been doing a bit of research,’ she said.

Claude looked at her suspiciously, wondering where this was going. She continued on.

‘The couple we saw arguing last night are from hut number six. And their names are . . .’

She unfolded the note the receptionist had given her.

‘ . . . Don and Lynne Anderson.’

‘Very impressive,’ said Claude. ‘Not that we’re doing any detective work at the moment.’

Inevitably though, Marjorie had started him thinking.

‘In any event, why are you assuming they were a couple?’

‘Well, I just thought it was standard husband and wife bickering, didn’t you?’

‘Probably. But why would they go outside for all the world to see and hear when they could have a perfectly good argument in the privacy of their own room?’

Marjorie pondered on this.

‘Not that we’re doing any detective work,’ she said.
