Alicia

Lori was beautiful. Obviously. She was all over the fashion magazines and style sections of the newspaper. It seemed to me that the photographers were more interested in her than they were in the models wearing her clothes. Not that I could blame them. She was the quintessential it girl, and now, that it girl was getting married.

It was Lori’s turn to be up on a stool, being fussed with. We were at New York’s most exclusive bridal boutique, tucked away in the trendiest part of town. Roger had called ahead to arrange to have the shop shut down for just the two of us.

It was like being locked in bridal wonderland. She had tried on frothy white dress after frothy white dress, each one looking more spectacular than the last.

Her current dress, a drop-waist flapper-style gown, was particularly stunning. I stood behind her and took a picture with my smartphone. “For Reena. “ I said, “ She needs to see this one.”

Examining every inch of the gown critically, Lori grunted. “Is she still in breakup lockdown?” She asked. “Poor thing. They’ve been together for as long as Roger and I have. That’s a big chunk of your life to just lose like that.”

“I think she’s making up for every year with pints of ice cream.” I said. “I’ve made, like, ten runs to Ernest Ice Cream on 4th for her so far.” Lori smiled at me, radiant as ever.

“You are such a good friend. I hope she appreciates you.”

I tried to smile back, but didn’t look nearly as gorgeous as she did. There was that little bit of guilt inside, slowly eating away at any kind of radiance I might still have left. A good friend? Really? Miss Alicia Fairfax herself? Gatherer and exploiter of secrets?

I decided to change to subject.

“You must be so excited.” I said. “Only a few weeks. He was really impatient to get this done!”

“I guess it was just time for him.” Lori stepped down, satisfied she had examined it enough. “For me too, though. I finally feel like something other than a trust fund darling. I have something for me. Some sort of success.” She slipped the dress off her slim shoulders and cast me a look as she went to the change room.

“Men like that. Successful men, at least.”

Was she speaking of Ryan? Was it obvious to everyone else how happy we were together? We’d been dating for almost a year now, and I still got butterflies whenever I saw him. Maybe it was time for us to move forward.

Or maybe that was just all the wedding dresses and tiaras luring me in.

Still, Lori wasn’t the only one enjoying some success. My articles for Scandalous were all over the city. I’d even overheard teenage girls talking about Miss Fairfax in line for my morning coffee. Not to mention, if Ryan didn’t propose, I was pretty sure my editor would. She was constantly having gift cards and baskets delivered, texting me daily with praise.
