A city usually bursting with light – now mostly dark would impede any man’s sense of direction. As Mike left the outskirts of Central Park he caught a glimpse of a sign: Adam Clayton Powell Jr Blvd. He slowly started to regain his sense of direction and realised a sign up head should indicate: W 112 St.

The plume of smoke rising up in the air was still fresh from the explosion. Little embers would occasionally spark and hiss while the smell of smoke lingered thick.

As Mike approached the city building he was relieved to see a handful of people just outside. They were all bundled up together looking up at the burning apartment; that at least lit the surrounding area to an orangey-yellow color.

A few feet away from the group Mike readied himself to say hello. He was just about to open his mouth when two or three windows shattered above; it made Mike think of a snake hissing – but twenty times louder.

The group to his right jumped up. This is when he realised that in the middle of the group was an elderly woman. Her many wrinkles like deep trenches. Her lips thin and pressed together. A back arched that would make the Hunchback of Notre Dame pale in comparison and a small hand clenching a wooden walking stick.

‘Excuse me–’

Another hiss exploded from high above. This time the group did not budge.

‘Excuse me guys.’ Mike said.

The group did not notice Mike standing next to them. In fact, everyone was much more fixated on the old lady. They surrounded her like a precious idol. Maybe it was nice of them Mike thought, they were probably keeping her safe.

The old lady’s thin lips opened up with a cry of agony. ‘Please, someone, my little one is inside!’

She peered up – fixated on the flames. ‘Why did this have to happen to me?’

A group member wrapped his arms around her. His left arm was full of tattoos; a fish, snake, heart and a lot of splodges. Surely a drive through tattoo.

‘Please someone, help my little one up there.’ She cried.

Everyone around her shook their head, their faces said it all, it was way too late now, the flames were raging to high heaven - it would be impossible to even walk up the stairs.

Everyone looked in pain; they shared the woman’s loss. This is when Mike walked over to the lady, he wanted to offer his condolences.

With the woman sobbing, Mike thought it would maybe bring her some comfort in telling her that maybe her child escaped the flames. He did not know if that was the right thing to say under the circumstances – but he did it anyway.

Her eyes rolled over to him very slow. The reflection of fire glinting in her eyes. This was also when Mike could not help but notice how deep her wrinkles actually were. She looked at him in a maternal motherly way. ‘Oh dear…thank you very much for your kind words. But I am afraid I left her in the cupboard.
