Hey, Hilja. I was at Sunday school today and got into a fight because Pinja said animals don’t go to heaven and I said they do and the teacher didn’t give us an answer. Why wouldn’t they go to heaven? God created animals and humans. What do you think?

Heaven was a place for cats, cows, lynx, and even the killing machines they called dogs in the Russian militia. They hadn’t chosen to be trained that way. Heaven was a place for curmudgeonly police officers, even if they decided to end their own lives. That’s how Hilja thought underneath Reiska’s clothes, but she didn’t tell that to Vanamo. Instead, she told her that she agreed with her that cats go to heaven, too. Hilja had no idea whether it was true or not, and Reiska had even less of a clue, and neither expected to find out while they were here on Earth. Hilja needed to allow Vanamo to preserve her faith and not rock it.

The message had calmed Reiska down enough for him to return to Käpylä. The whisky and beer had gotten to his head, but not enough to make him stop caring. Reiska would’ve needed a half a bottle of vodka for that.

When Mrs. Voutilainen came to the door, she became worried at the look on Reiska’s tired face. Then he disappeared from me entirely, and I fell into Mrs. Voutilainen’s arms and sobbed.
