The conversation continues until Lessard has no more questions.

Before leaving the conference room, he obtains Sandoval’s home address, as well as contact information for Mayor Applebaum’s widow.

From the police station, he drives to Marquette Street.

He slows down and, looking to his left, contemplates the Sherbrooke Seminary, where Quebec Premier Jean Charest was once a student.

A few months ago, Lessard went for a long walk in Sherbrooke’s old north ward. He was accompanied by Véronique, who grew up in the area. Apart from her love of painting, Véronique is also interested in history and architecture. And so, one fine autumn afternoon, she treated Lessard to a quick, fascinating lecture on the seminary.

As he drives past, he glances up at the high parapets of the old red-brick building, where statues of Lord Elgin, Frontenac, and St. Charles Borromeo look out over the city. Lessard isn’t surprised to be recalling these details.

I have a great memory for useless stuff.
