Daphna left at midnight, disappointed that they wouldn’t be getting married tomorrow, but some things weren’t meant to be. And it really would be inappropriate, what had she been thinking? But she was worried about Seth. He was under an unimaginable amount of stress, and not thinking clearly. The smallest thing might send him down a dark, destructive abyss.

As the elevator coasted down to the lobby, she thought about a life with Seth. Their futures had always been entwined, and it seemed as if fate had forged an inexorable path for them to walk side by side. The question now was where that path would lead them. She thought of the script she was reading and her spirits sank. Love always ended in tragedy.

She greeted the doorman named Archie, an older gentleman with a rough, sun-cured face and a nice smile. He’d been on duty when Amber had stormed the ramparts, and he’d also spoken to Officer Birchard. Security had been informed not to let that maniac through ever again, but if she still had a key, she could get into the building through the parking garage, couldn’t she? Daphna asked him.

“Sure, if she has the garage code, Ms. Love.”

Daphna didn’t know if she did or not. “She could still get into the garage on foot, couldn’t she?”

Archie folded his lips together as he considered her question earnestly. “I guess she could.”

“Are there cameras?”

He hesitated. “We’re installing a new system, so they’re not up and running yet, but we do regular checks. I don’t want you to worry about her, Ms. Love, she wouldn’t try it. She’s had some time to cool off. Plus, when people like her get a visit from the cops, that’s a big reality check. I’ve seen plenty of this sort of thing.”

“People like her?”

Archie shifted uncomfortably. “I don’t want to speak out of turn, Ms. Love.”

“I promise you anything you say is between us.”

“Amber Harrison thinks she owns the world, thinks she can do whatever she wants. When she came around—it wasn’t often, mind you—she always treated me like something on the bottom of her shoe. She got knocked down a few notches and I’m sure she’s feeling it.”

“I know the type, and it makes me sad. I’m sorry, Archie.”

“You’re good people, Ms. Love, nothing like her.”

“Watch out for Seth, will you? Just in case.”

“I promise I will, ma’am, and I’ll let my relief know, he’ll be here soon. And I’m on duty again tomorrow morning, so don’t let it trouble you anymore.”

“Thank you, I feel so much better. Have a nice night, Archie.”

He grinned at her, then blushed and looked down at his feet. “You, too, Ms. Love. It’s really an honor to know you. I mean, to meet you again.”

“The honor is mine. Do you have children?”

“That’s really flattering.” He chuckled. “I have grandchildren. And all of them are crazy about you and your movies.”
