Vivien was sitting at Vatcher’s desk trying to concentrate on what he had to report but her mind kept returning to New Orleans. On the plane ride home, she had thought of little else but Charles Lafayette. She was embarrassed that she had a little crush on her American colleague. But why not, he was a charming man, smart, good looking and tall enough for a tall girl like herself. He was a terrible dancer who didn’t let it stop him from dancing. Any woman would have the same feelings about him as she did. It was the first time a man had been much in her mind since she left Mark. She didn’t see a ring but felt uneasy about not asking whether he had a partner. One hundred percent, the guy was straight. Maybe it was a good thing. Maybe it was time.

She’d come straight from the airport to the police station to meet with Vatcher, who had copies of Gustave Polk’s cell phone records laid out on his desk. She was running on far too little sleep.

“These were the calls out stored in the phone, I only went back three weeks,” Vatcher said. “Twelve calls to coin dealers in London and Paris.”

Vivien nodded. It was confirmed then, rare coins were the booty.

“Three more calls to outfits calling themselves ‘Antiquarians.’ A call to someone at the auction house, Christies, in New York. Business calls I suspect, local numbers in the oil play, Galveston, Houston, call to an offshore rig. Twenty-seven calls to residential numbers here in St. John’s, nineteen of those to…get this…an Adam R. Mackay.”

Vivien didn’t get it. “Father Mackay? The Father Mackay there is an arrest warrant for?”

“What the fuck, hey?”

“Yeah, like really what-the-fuck what the fuck. Any idea what that is about?”

“None.”

“Mackay is still at large, right?”

Vatcher checked his computer screen.

“As of a few hours ago, yeah. “

“Okay, we have to talk to Mark about this, see if he knows anything about it.”

“Sure,” Vatcher drew a breath. “You know Viv, I have, you know, a medical issue and it means I can’t really be too far from a men’s room. If, going forward with the investigation, I can ride the desk, do what has to be done here?”

“Absolutely, Ger, I completely understand.”

“Thank you.”

“So, you don’t wanna come with me now?”

“Where?”

“To see Mark.”

“I’m sure he’s gone home by now.”

Vivien checked her watch, she’d overnighted at an airport hotel in Toronto, taken a midday flight to St. John’s and so lost the day.

“You’re right. Fuck it, I’ll go over to his place.”

Vatcher shifted in his seat.

“You should call first.”

“Something I don’t know, Ger?”

“No.”

“I left Mark, remember, not the other way around. I’m not going to be shocked if he’s there with a new girlfriend.”

“Can I be candid, Viv?”

“Yes.”

“In my many years in policing I’ve been called to a great many domestic disturbances where the man or the woman who ended up in trouble had convinced themselves of that very thing.”

“Thanks for the tip. I’ll put my sidearm in the locker before going over there.
