Sunday 11:59 a.m.

Derek left the hospital and drove to his favorite bar to be with other cops and get staggering drunk. His father called him, asked him where he was, and Derek hung up without answering. The old man probably found out about the divorce papers. He bitched at Derek non-stop ever since Eve moved out of the house. Why was he trying so hard to ruin his life? Didn't he care about anyone besides himself?

He received a text from his dad that he felt almost too wasted to read.

'Your mother is heartbroken about Eve. Do not sign the papers.'

'Toollate,' Derek texted, botching the spelling.

Caylin had probably sent them by next day air.

'Big mistake,' came his dad's reply. 'Don't go near her cousin.'

Derek held up his phone, told his father to fuck off and leave him alone. Then he signaled the bartender for another drink.

"He doesn't need one," Caylin said from behind him, and she came to slide onto the stool next to Derek. "You should have something to eat instead."

"Did you send the papers?" he asked.

"You told me to, so I did."

"That's what I told him."

"Told who?"

"My father doesn't want us to get a divorce."

Caylin turned her face away and rolled her eyes. "Well, it isn't really his business now, is it?"

"I think so too. That it's not his business who I divorce. If he loves her so goddamn much why doesn't he marry her?"

The listening ears of the bartender made Caylin realize she should get Derek out of the bar and have this conversation elsewhere.

"Come on," she said. "I have one more day off duty. Let's go for a steak somewhere. Or a burger. You choose."

Derek wasn't ready to leave, but he saw the bartender take out his phone and realized the same as Caylin that a call to his father came next, so he lurched off the stool and allowed Caylin to hold him up as they headed for the exit.

"I'll get him in the car then come back and take care of the tab," Caylin told the frowning barkeep.

She hated cop bars, she told Derek as they stepped out into the daylight. Derek said that's why he went there, so she wouldn't show up and bother him. He opened her passenger door and nearly fell inside. "But you did anyway. My dad told me to stay away from you."

Caylin scowled at him, marched back inside the bar to pay the tab.

"Just what is his problem with me?" She asked after she returned. She climbed behind the wheel and struggled to fasten his seat belt.

"Same as mine," Derek said and he pushed her hands away and did it himself. "You're not Eve."

Caylin blew air through her nose in an angry puff. "You're drunk right now so let's not talk about her anymore, all right? What do you want to eat?"

"Anything. I don't care. No, wait, where did you mail the papers? Did you mail them back to Eve?"
