Chapter 12
Once we were underway, I was immediately escorted to sickbay. The ship’s medic checked me out and said I was fine, though slightly malnourished. More importantly, the baby was fine as well.
He gave me some vitamin pills and sent me back to my room to rest. A good night’s rest sounded wonderful to me.
After tapping the overhead light control, I crawled into bed. With what I had been through, the unfamiliar surroundings made me anxious. There was a lamp bolted onto the small table next to the bed. I touched its sensor until it was at its lowest setting.
I pulled the blankets up to my chin and curled up on my side. The bed was soft and the sheets and covers were silky against my skin. As I stared out the viewport at the stars with one arm protectively covering my belly, it didn’t take much for me to fall into a deep sleep.
When I finally woke from an extra-long slumber, I was starving. My stomach was grumbling and I decided to get some food first thing.
I left my room and padded through the corridor in my bare feet and oversized clothes. I wandered through the ship and found Dashel in the observation lounge. He was sitting at the long conference table going through documents on his comPad. I was hesitant to disturb him because he seemed to be reading so intently, but when I approached, he looked up and a smile spread across his face.
“Ah, little one. I trust you rested well?” he asked as he set the comPad aside, giving me his undivided attention.
He held out his hand to me and I went to him, and clasped it in mine, happy to feel the warmth. “Yes, sir.”
“You must be hungry.”
I nodded. “Yes. I’m starving.”
“Let me show you were the galley is.”
I followed Dashel down to the galley, where they had a small buffet set up in the kitchen. Dashel helped me fix a heaping plate of food. I ate like I hadn’t seen food in months, which was actually quite true. I didn’t really know what everything on my plate was, but I ate it all the same.
I dumped one of the vitamin pills into the palm of my hand from the bottle the doctor gave me. The pill was so big that I about choked just looking at it. I managed to get it down with a big glass of water.
Dashel then brought me another glass of water and another plate of food, which I happily dug into.
“It’s been a while since I had real food,” I said happily as I ate my last cube of some sort of delicious orangey cheesy thing.
Dashel laughed loudly. “I would hardly call this real food. We will have a feast in your honor when we reach home.”
“Will there be cheese like this? It’s quite good.”
“Anything you want.”
I was silent for a moment, before I looked up at Dashel. I had a million questions in my mind regarding my future.
