The air on the second floor was hazy and stank of burning plastic. Some guys were coughing. That kind of noise wouldn’t do at all.

Drake came through the door, reported that the exit was clear. Roth took him to one side. “You’re going to have to shoot, no question. Don’t think, just do it. Everybody’s lives depend on it.”

“Understood.”

“Confirm when you’re in position.”

Roth turned, saw his men waiting in the darkness. “Listen up. When we hit the main entrance we turn right, then head north past the ball courts. We pick up Meyer and the others, then we head west. We move quickly and quietly. Anyone comes at us, drop them. And don’t hesitate; they’re not human anymore. Christ knows we’ll be doing them a favour.”

He tried to pick out their faces in the dark. They were shadows, nothing more, and for a moment he wondered what they were thinking, whether they too held him responsible for all of this. Roth knew one thing for sure - he’d never lead this team again. And that meant saving as many of them as possible.

At the end of the hallway, the room was ablaze, and orange flames roared and cracked across the walls and ceiling. Roth headed for the main door, took a quick look left and right. Nothing. The storm was still blowing hard and Roth was grateful for it. He peeled right and the others followed. They moved fast, found the shipping container, linked up with Meyer and the others.

They waited, crouched in the darkness, as the Humvees roared into life and swung around, lights cutting through the storm, tyres bouncing over kerbs, and then they swung west onto Main Street. A moment later they were lost in the storm.

He slapped Costello on the arm. “Tell Bosco he’s got incoming friendlies, two minutes out. Tell him those doors better be open or I’ll shoot him myself.”

Roth got to his feet as Costello relayed most of the message. “Prepare to move,” he said into his radio.

Roth led his men into the swirling, shifting darkness.
