The ride back to Boston was not a happy experience. For the most part, neither Sheridan nor Jensen spoke. And Sheridan knew that Donna would remain at Hampton.

He dropped Jensen off at St. Anne’s front entrance. It was a busy place—ambulances, taxis, patients being wheeled toward waiting automobiles, some hobbling on crutches, others being carried in on stretchers, accompanied by emergency techs, medics, and nurses.

Sheridan jumped into the embarrassing silence.

“Want to thank you for coming up with me, Doctor. This wasn’t Donna’s day, I guess.”

“Guess not,” Jensen said tersely. He got out on the passenger’s side and shut the door with a decisive thud. He merely nodded, then walked toward the entrance.

With the slam of the door and Jensen’s departure, the tiny window for Donna DiTullio had been effectively shut. And Sheridan had no cards left. He had played out his hand.
