Chapter Ten

Flurries started to drop down from the darkening sky. The parking lot to the Buffalo Bar and Grill was crowded, an establishment best known for their impeccable steak and relaxing atmosphere.

Perry and Dean, both in blazers, sat at a window table. They were joined by the restaurant’s owner, Sal Vivona, a former pit boss over in Vegas who came to Middlesex to run this restaurant and also oversee an after-hours club sponsored by his mobster friends. A feeble man was Vivona, pointy cheekbones and slick hair, dressed gangster in a Brioni Roman Style pinstripe suit. His two bodyguards sitting to his left thugged it up in leather trenches. The place was noisy, still not enough to annoy the ears; people conversed, silverware banged, soft music played.

“You two ordering food or did you come here to drink the water?”

“We came here to talk business, Mr. Vivona.”

“I like to eat when I talk business. If you don’t mind?”

“Be my guest.”

“That’s mighty kind of you.” Vivona snapped his fingers. A pretty waitress appeared, obvious she wanted to impress her boss. “I’ll have the usual, Kammy. And make sure Charlie doesn’t overcook my steak. Thanks, sweetie.” Vivona gawked at the waitress’ ass as she walked away. “Now let’s get down to why you’re sitting here. I understand you want to work out some sort of business partnership with me. Am I correct?”

“You are.”

“Alright, shoot the shit to me.”

Dean felt no reason to pussyfoot around. He needed to go right at this wannabe wise guy and make his presence felt.

“Mr. Vivona, it’s quite simple. Your business is coinciding with my business. And I can’t have that.”

Vivona’s eyes enlarged.

“You buy into this restaurant, which doesn’t concern me. I hope this place does well for you. But the after-hours gambling club you’ve set up over in The Fox’s Den, along with the bordello, that does concern me. It concerns me a great deal.”

“Who the fuck?” Vivona uttered.

“We run a successful gambling club over at one of the sorority houses, not to mention off-campus bordello. I’m aware of efforts being made by you to steal away most of my clientele.

“You honestly believe you can compete with me, kid?”

“I don’t believe we need to compete with each other, Mr. Vivona. I see no reason why we couldn’t work something out. I’m thinking you maybe cut us in on your action.”

“That’s what you’re thinking?”

“Either cut us in… or you pack up shop and head back to Las Vegas.”

It took Vivona a few seconds to recover from the sting of disrespect.

“Who do you think you are? Fuckin’ gangsters?”

“We’re simply young men trying to find their way in the world.”

“Kid, don't get involved like this.”

“Involved like what? We’re talking business here aren’t we?”

“I’m warning ya, don’t. ‘Cause if you do, then I’ll have no other choice than to introduce you to the real thing.”

“Mr. Vivona, you aren’t comprehending—”

“I’m talking to your friend.”

Perry rested back in his chair and smiled.

“I know the fable you teenie-boppers been running on. Everybody in my business does.
