Chapter Nine

A Black Brother in the Black of Night

With a gentle swoosh the canoe slid up onto the shore. Dash jumped out and pulled the boat onto

dry land where the ghost of his dear dead daddy clambered awkwardly ashore, cigar still clenched

tightly between his teeth. A short distance away, through a scattering of tall pines, they could see

the Fuller Farmstead and the long black Abercumbie & Felch truck parked alongside it. Through the

window in the farmstead Dash could make out the flickering reflection of a log fire burning, but

apart from that, there was no sign of life anywhere. And no sign of Tommy whatsoever.

As Dash concealed the canoe beneath the canopy of a nearby willow, his daddy said quietly, “Well,

this is where I have to leave you.”

“Leave!” Dash whispered harshly. “We only just got here! What about Tommy?”

“Don"t you worry none about him. Now that I got you here, you"ll figure out what to do. Just keep

yo" eye on that storm, y"hear?”

“Keep my eye on the storm! First you tell me Tommy"s life is in danger, now all you"re worried

about is a little rain?”

“Oh, shut yo" mouth, Little Bessy Lou! You ain"t done nothin" but complain since I got here! Open

yo" trap one mo" time and I swear I"ll wup yo" ass from here to kingdom—”

“Come,” came a sudden, monotone voice through the pines.

Dash and his daddy dropped instantly into a crouch, staying low and silent in the shadows as they

saw a handsome young man, completely naked, walking very stiffly—in more ways than one—

through the trees.

A second man followed a short distance behind him. They seemed to be surveying the grounds,

stopping every few steps to turn their heads from left to right, scanning the area. “This way, Biff,”

the first man said.

The two made their way to the trunk of the willow tree and stopped mere feet away from Dash and

his daddy. Dash pressed himself against the other side of the tree"s wide trunk, barely breathing, not

making a sound. His daddy faded from sight.

“I don"t see anything, Chad,” the second man commented in an equally loud and monotoned voice.

“Are you sure your cerebral circuits are functioning properly? You"ve had a few late nights,

recently. Don"t think I haven"t noticed you and Kipper sneak off together after shut-down and

activate each other"s pump drives.”

“You"re not my boyfriend anymore, Biff,” was Chad"s evenly-worded comeback. “I thought I made

that clear. Perhaps you need to have your biorhythms checked.”

“Oh, for Peter"s sake! Don"t make me out to be the emotionally unhinged one,” Biff responded

emotionlessly, and, with that, he turned and walked away.

Chad exhaled loudly in an attempt to sigh, and then chased rather mechanically after his naked

companion. “Biff. Wait. I didn"t mean it like that. Kipper doesn"t mean anything, I swear.”

As their voices trailed away, Dash and his daddy let out a long “Phew” and peered around the trunk

of the willow tree to make sure Biff and Chad were gone.

Dash asked, “What the heck was that all about?”

“I dunno,” replied his dear dead daddy, “but it sounds to me like Chad"s got some explainin" to do.
