Chapter Twenty-Seven

Sarah rifled through the man’s wallet until she pulled out his driver’s license.

“Aristotle Hatzis?”

“I go by Aris.” Their eyes met in the mirror. “Only my mother uses my full name.”

“Where is your mother now?”

He stared forward through the windshield.

Sarah tried again. “You think she’d be proud of her Greek heritage by coming to America and having her son work for some preacher gangster?”

“Look, I already told you. The bank’s about to take my house. I have a wife, a daughter, and with my experience in law enforcement, I was told Cohen pays well.”

“The whole frog in the boiling water scenario.”

“What’s that?”

“How old is your daughter?” she asked, ignoring his question.

“She’ll be two next month.”

“And you want to get home safe to your little girl, right?”

“What kind of question is that?”

Sarah pulled his wallet apart and withdrew card after card. A picture slipped out between two cards and fell onto her lap. She picked it up and examined the faces in the photo.

“This your wife and daughter?” She held it up for him to see in the rearview mirror.

His eyes glazed over. “Yes.”

“You want to see them again, right?”

“What kind of question—”

“One I want an answer to!” she shouted. “Fuckin’ answer me.” She raised the gun. “Or should I smack you with this? Do you want to see them again? Yes or no?”

“Yes,” he cried out. “Of course, I do.”

“Well, guess what. I want to see my daughter again, too. I’m so sick of people separating us from each other that I’m ready to start shooting people on sight.”

She leaned back in the seat and looked out the window. After a moment, when her heart calmed while thinking about where Willow may be, she stared at his driver’s license.

“I suspect I’ll find your loved ones on Hilltop Crescent in Casper, Wyoming when this is all over.”

“I’ll kill you first,” he muttered from the front seat.

“Or we can work together so both of us can have our families back.”

He didn’t respond.

“You’re either on my side, or you’re not.” Sarah tossed his wallet into the front seat but slipped the license into her pocket. “I’ll hold onto your license until this is over.”

“So, what, I work with you to save my family from you? Is that it?” He shook his head. “Brilliant. That’ll put my family at risk from Cohen, and trust me. He’s far scarier.”

“No, you work with me and end Cohen’s reign. That leaves no one to bother your family.” She moved to lean on the back of his seat. “Worst case is you’re looking for a new job. No jail time, no one hurt in the Hatzis family.”

“Take down Cohen?” He scoffed. “Yeah, right. We have a better chance of kidnapping the Easter bunny and making him shit golden eggs.”

Sarah withdrew Aris’s phone and dialed Parkman’s number. He answered right away.

“Hello?” The greeting was more of a question as he probably didn’t recognize the number.

“Parkman, it’s Sarah. One second. I’m going to put you on speakerphone.” She tapped the button.
