Pylas Crier was confused and in pain. His arms and legs ached. His chest felt like it was being squeezed within a giant’s fist. What the hell was going on? The light hurt his eyes, his eyes, which hadn’t been open for. . . for. . .

“Wil! Wil Parish! Damn you!” Crier cried.

Crier rubbed his eyes, causing crusted yellow diamonds to fall like an over-accumulation of sleep. He tried to open his eyes, squinted, tried to see, but realized that they’d taken his glasses. Of course they had. He hadn’t needed them where he was going. But he needed them now. He couldn’t see without his glasses, but nor was the Yellow Diamond ready to reassert itself. Its attempts, however, were giving him an excruciating headache, which competed with the sharp pains in his limbs, his chest. He was having difficulty supporting himself with his hands to get into a position to stand, but even getting one leg underneath him, he couldn’t find enough strength there to rise. Not yet.

Crier thought he heard a voice in his head. Was someone nearby? Someone had to be or he wouldn’t be out of the coffin. If it was Parish, he’d kill him. Better, though, if it were Leilia.

He became aware of the alarm sounding now, and dragged himself toward the flashing red light. Strength was starting to return. What was that other sound? Damn it, he needed to be able to see.

He opened his eyes and squinted, but all they did was fill up with more crusted yellow diamonds, which he wiped away, but which also made his eyeballs and temples throb with maddening agony. He rose to one knee, struggled upwards, and managed to rise to his feet, though he wobbled and tottered.

That unfamiliar sound was coming from all directions now. And added to that was a familiar sound, that of coherent light, targeting him, he was sure. He felt a hot lance sear his right cheek. Then a man-sized shape was coming for him and he felt his belly open up, sliced neatly and cleanly, spilling a dangerous amount of blood. He dropped back down to one knee, nauseated and faint. Blood poured out of him, spreading over the floor, forming a thick red pool that seemed to him—in a surreal hallucination pretending at clear vision—to be infinitely deep.
