CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE

Joe and Taylor rode in silence to his apartment. Once inside, she couldn’t take it anymore. “Listen, Joe, I don’t have to stay here this time. I can find a hotel to stay at while I search for a place. My car is here. I had Dillon pick me up earlier.”

Joe turned to look at her. “I don’t want you to stay at a hotel. I’m not sure why you didn’t tell me you’d even applied for the position.”

Taylor sat on the arm of the sofa. “I know you don’t want a serious relationship with me. I’m trying to be okay with that. When I got the chance to apply for this position, I didn’t think about anything else but the job. After I had interviewed for it, we had that talk, and you made it clear to me you didn’t want a relationship—at least not more than what we have. I didn’t want you to think I was trying to force your hand. I’m not going to beg you to be my boyfriend or not see other women. Even with me living here, I still won’t do that.”

She stood up and went to him. “I’ll be honest Joe. I’m in love with you. I want more than this. I don’t know how long I can continue this way. The thought of you having sex with other women drives me crazy. I hate it.” Taylor had hoped by confessing her love for him she would elicit a reaction.

Joe rubbed his face. He didn’t want to discuss this now. Between Damien harassing him and Taylor pushing him, the coil in his stomach tightened. A conversation would have to occur soon. He just didn’t know if he’d be able to do it. He sat on the arm of the sofa and pulled her between his legs. “I care a lot for you. I’m just not ready to commit. It doesn’t have anything to do with sleeping with other women. It’s not you that I can’t commit to, it’s any woman.”

Taylor was about to give in and follow him to the bedroom. But she couldn’t. She’d had enough. She wouldn’t wait for the scraps of love and affection he threw her way. If he wanted her, he would have to come to her. Taylor pulled away from him. “Well, I’m glad to hear it isn’t just me.” She started to gather her things.

Joe tilted his head to the side. “Umm—I thought you were staying here. Did I miss something?”

She stopped short of the door turning toward him. “Yeah Joe, you missed something. For someone as smart as you, you sure are acting like a dumbass. I can’t—I can’t do this anymore. I’ve already compromised so much of myself. I stood here and told you I loved you, and your response was you’re not ready. When you are ready, you know how to reach me. I do love you Joe, more than I have loved any other man in my life. But I won’t wait forever for you to choose me.
