CHAPTER TEN

RACHEL COAST

The next day arrived quickly. After a swift breakfast, we were all assembled in the White Room. There were plans and maps scattered in front of us with notes scribbled all over them, as well as a variety of objects. I recognised some of them from the old wooden bookcase in Mr Plume’s office.

Mr Plume stood up.

‘Good morning, everyone.’

We all responded in various tones and completely out of sync with each other. Mr Plume began briefing us straight away.

‘Now that we are all here I will begin… Now, our intel tells us that Conik Penster Dewe and Austin are on their way back from New York. We only have two more days before the Cantartis takes Austin completely. Getting to the real Cantartis is not going to be easy; from the information we have been able to garner, coupled with a few assumed calculations, we believe it is accessible from Conik Penster Dewe’s office here in London. He will have made sure that it will be hard to reach and heavily guarded. In view of this, there is only one way to locate it.’

He stopped and scanned us all.

‘One of us must follow Conik Penster Dewe when he arrives back in London. He is the only one who can lead us to the Cantartis. Lisa, because of your unique capabilities you are the only one that can carry out this task. I need you to attach yourself to him the moment he gets off the plane. Then you will be in a position to access this crucial information.’

Mrs Fitzgerald smiled and nodded as she answered in her soft Irish accent. ‘Yes, Gerald, of course.’

‘I have maintained brief communications with Conik over the last few weeks and thankfully he is still oblivious to the fact that we are positioned here on Earth,’ Mr Plume continued. ‘He has been successfully fooled into believing that we are still stationed deep in space merely observing the stability of the hyper-tunnel.’ He turned to Celeste. ‘Well done, your security measures have remained resolute. Conik has no idea that we are aware of his plans and he certainly has no idea of ours. This gives us a distinct advantage. His private jet will be arriving at 1900 hours tomorrow night, and the last piece of Austin will be taken by the Cantartis later that evening.’

That soon?

My stomach flipped and my adrenaline starting pumping. It had been so long since I’d seen or heard from Austin that the thought of coming face to face with him again was beginning to make me feel sick with anticipation. Mr Plume continued with the briefing, looking at Celeste.

‘Celeste, you will accompany Mrs Fitzgerald to the airport and follow them from a distance. I want you to notify me the moment they enter the tunnel that leads to Conik Penster Dewe’s offices. You will stop following them at this point and wait there until the rest of us join you. We will then wait for the information we need from Mrs Fitzgerald before entering the tunnel and in turn the office building.
