Jack entered the restaurant kitchen and found Jake Brady doing something at the stove, his back to him. Besides being his partner in Two-Jakes, Brady had been in Jackâs life so long that he was like a second father. At sixty-eight years old, he was as strong as Liddell and a little taller, with thick arms covered in coarse red hair.
Brady was mumbling something, or maybe humming, or even singing; it was hard for Jack to tell the difference sometimes because of Bradyâs gruff voice. He started forward, but a wave of vertigo overtook him, and he held on to the wall behind him.
His hands shook, and his head felt like his skull would split. He closed his eyes to block out the pain and gasped when he saw something shiny flashing toward him. He flinched and felt the bite of the blade cut through his face and neck and deep into his chest. He opened his eyes, and it was goneâthe pain in his head, the dizziness, the burning in his neck and chest. He looked up to see Jake Brady staring at him with concern in his eyes.
âWhat is it, son?â Brady said.
âItâs nothing, old man,â Jack said and tried to smile. âI just realized how hungry I am.â
âWell, you looked like you was going to faint,â Brady said, still staring at him. âOld man, my ass,â he grumbled, then said, âIâll fix you something up. What do you want?â He turned back to the huge stove and pulled a skillet down from overhead.
Jackâs hands started shaking, and he stuck them in his pockets.
âYouâre creeping me out, Jack,â Brady said without turning around.
âSorry. I guess Iâm just not hungry.â
âWell, you gotta eat. So bacon and eggs then,â Brady said and began cracking eggs into a bowl. âHow about the others?â He nodded in the direction of the war room.
Jack braced himself with the wall and opened the door. âIâll go ask, but you can probably just make a heap of everything. Liddell will clean up any leftovers.â
Brady laughed. He was well aware of the big manâs appetite. He tossed two pounds of bacon on the griddle.
