"I'm telling you, man," said Kevin, "something fucking stinks and we've got to be here to watch Samuel's back. He's got to be in that house. He's got to be. You know what I'm saying, man? It's the same cop that came to pick him up and because Samuel wasn't home he came here and now that he's still here I put two and two together and I come up with the only answer: Samuel is in that fucking house, man. I'm not leaving just cause you candy-asses want to hightail it out of here."

"Frankly, I am downright disgusted with the whole lot of you," said David. "You haven't bothered to go up to the house and knock on the door. You haven't offered them any herbal treats. And you haven't even invited the coppers into our car to share a wee puff with three very fine men."

Derek laughed at David's silliness and was inspired to spark up another herbal treat, despite the presence of a police cruiser parked at the end of the street. The position of their vehicle from where the officer stood at the door of the house was over half a block, but Derek still had an issue about opening the window to air out the smoke again. Instead, the car filled up with the scent of sweet herb. Kevin knew the thought pleased his brother immensely that the very substance which gave life truth and meaning might enlighten all three of them.

David turned to Derek in the back seat. "Stop talking nonsense, retard," he said. "Give me another — Shit on a stick! With urine running down the pole! HOLY FUCK! Look!"

Kevin glanced into the rear-view mirror to see a solid stream of flashing cruiser lights. A long line of police cruisers had just turned down the side street, toward the canal. They were headed straight for the Glebe house where the officer stood freezing his balls off waiting for somebody to answer the door.

"Get low," said Kevin. "Oh, man! Like I said before."

"You're worried," exclaimed Derek. "You fucking retard! We could have stayed home in this fucking cold with pints galore and enough spliffs to choke a camel, but, oh no, you had to see what's what."

"Eat it now before we get popped!" ordered Kevin.

"Eat what?" asked David.

"The herb man," said Derek. "You're a fucking genius, bro." Derek was always proud that his older brother kept a cool head in times of distress.

"Here," said Kevin to David. "Hold out your palms and take some. Shove it down your throats and chug some beer."

Derek reached down to his feet and pulled out a cold beer from under the seat.

"You've got to be kidding me," said David. "I'll be so stoned I won't even know my own name."

"Fucking eat it, man," said Kevin. "I'm not going to prison for no one and neither is D-boy. Eat it or I'll shove it down your throat."

"You insistent brute," joked David, taking the pile of finely cut herbal leaves and reluctantly shoving them into his mouth.
