Chapter Thirteen

Bethany and Mike had spoken to Sunbeam again but got nothing more out of her than Bethany had on the phone. It was frustrating but couldn’t be helped. You couldn’t get blood out of a stone.

Now they stood at the front door of the house next to Polly’s — the resident had told Nicola about a man getting out of a car and going down Polly’s side alley yesterday.

At last. Something to get their teeth into.

Mrs Olive Quinto, around the same age as Polly but with a clear aversion to giving in gracefully to the grey hair, her head a cloud of bottle black, took them into a sunny kitchen. The back door was open to let in fresh air, and the yellow accents everywhere gave the room a cheery feel, which brightened Bethany’s mood somewhat.

They sat around her circular pine dinner table with cups of tea.

“Mrs Quinto—”

“Olive, please.” She showed off her dentures.

Bethany smiled. “What time did you see the man and the car?”

“It was yesterday, in the afternoon, but I’m afraid I don’t know the time. I’d had a nap in my chair by the window, and I’d woken up. Well, I looked out, and there he was, parking his grey car outside.”

Grey. Like a million others. Fabbo.

“Do you know the make?”

“No. It was just a grey car. I didn’t even notice whether it was four doors or two. I’m a little disorientated after I’ve had a nap, see.”

“Was it on your side of the road or opposite?”

“Oh, right outside, dear. My side. I thought he was going to see Polly, but then he went down her alley instead. Behind us is a field where you can walk dogs, so I assumed he’d maybe had a small puppy with him, one I couldn’t see — my hedge blocks the view of the pavement.”

“Did you see him come back?”

“No. I was making some cheese and biscuits — I love Jacobs Cream Crackers, don’t you? Nice bit of Lurpak on them, maybe some of that Philadelphia, the one with the chives in it. But no, I didn’t see him again. He isn’t from around here — I know all the neighbours by sight, and most of their visitors, too. I made it my business to study them all when I moved in. You can’t be too careful, and it’s best to know who you live by. When I went back in the living room after eating in here — oh, and I had a nice cup of tea as well; I used that Jersey milk, the sort where there’s loads of cream in it. Don’t you reckon it tastes better?” She nodded at Bethany’s cup.

“It’s lovely. The man . . . ?”

“Oh yes, the car had gone. I was also naughty and ate a few Ritz as well. I shouldn’t, because of the salt, but I can’t help myself.”

“How long do you think you were in the kitchen for?”

“No idea . . .”

“What was the man like?” Bethany sipped some tea.
