Chapter Twenty
H ardy and Russell pulled up outside Rob Draytonâs house. It was a three-storey detached property in one of the more salubrious parts of town, with two main gates and a semi-circular driveway which allowed the occupants the luxury of not having to reverse their vehicle out once they had driven in.
The cloudburst which they had driven through had now petered out to a minimal splatter, so much so that for the last couple of hundred yards the windscreen wipers were no longer necessary.
Hardy suspected that Drayton would already be aware of their imminent arrival. When he and Russell had first tried to locate Drayton at his office, his personal assistant had been very insistent that her boss was at home and too ill for visitors.
After she had reluctantly handed over his home address, Hardy noticed her reaching for the phone as soon as they began to walk away, doubtless to warn her superior that the officers were on route.
They parked outside in the street and walked along the gravel drive towards the front door.
Russell nudged his superior officer when they were about twenty feet from the door, Hardy followed his gaze, and sure enough he could see one of the downstairs curtains twitching as someone behind them tried to casually have a look at the approaching officers.
The woman who opened the door was extremely tall and thin, with a sharp, pointy nose and gaunt features. Her jet-black hair was tied up in a bun on top of her head, which Hardy suspected caused her features to look even more severe, whether or not that was the desired effect.
The two of them introduced themselves and showed their identity cards before enquiring as to whether or not Drayton was at home.
Having studied the offered IDs intently, the woman looked back at the two men and stated. âI am his wife, why do you wish to speak to him?â
Hardy explained that if Drayton was at home it would be better if they came inside and explained.
Mrs. Drayton considered the prospect for a moment before stepping back just far enough to allow them entry.
Once they were inside the woman closed the front door and strode purposefully towards a room on the far side of the hallway, it was the same one Hardy noticed from which they had noticed the curtain moving.
The womanâs heels clacked loudly on the Victorian tiled floor.
âThis way,â she barked back, curtly, not bothering to check if the two of them were in fact following.
When they entered the room, a man sitting in an armchair looked up from his newspaper in surprise, as if he was only just aware that they had visitors.
Before Hardy or Russell had a chance to introduce themselves, Mrs. Drayton did the honours.
âRobert,â she announced, sternly, âthese two police officers need to speak with you.â
Rob Drayton folded his newspaper and placed it on a small table beside his chair, before he stood up and nervously approached the two men.
âPlease sit down, gentlemen,â he offered, politely.
