THE FATHER

2007

“Are you sure you’re ready for this, honey?” Pamela asked, her blouse partly unbuttoned, revealing a lacy bra as she bent forward over the glossy desk. Roland was dumbstruck, trying to remember how to speak English as she let her hair down and shook out the curls. Over the past few months, she had transformed herself into some sort of 1950s pinup girl, and he loved that the makeover was entirely for his benefit. The big blond hair, the pointed pumps, the stockings with the pinstripe, the skintight pencil skirt, the red lipstick. She was the Marilyn to his JFK, and he’d never been happier.

When she straightened up, she looked at him quizzically and, seeing his slackjawed expression, giggled and blew him a kiss. In her soft, manicured hands, she held the silver tray that usually housed Roland’s fountain pens. His Sailor, Caran D’Ache, Waterman, Visconti, Aurora, and prized Montblanc pens had each been replaced by slender white lines. Three for him and three for her.

He didn’t even care where she’d put his collection. They could be in the fire for all he cared because, right now, it was all about her. She sidled up to him, kicking off her heels as she went, hips swaying to the jazz playing quietly from the record player in the corner. Her dimples deepened as she got close, the flattering amber glow of the firelight enhancing her already extraordinary beauty.

Roland craned his neck and glanced at the calendar on his computer screen. It was 10:30 p.m. on Monday, June 5, 2007. The kids were both indeed asleep, Nancy was visiting her sick father in Portland, and he had no meetings scheduled for the following day.

“Ready as I’ll ever be,” he said, flashing Pamela an election-winning smile.

Pamela perched on his lap delicately, held up the tray, and placed a rolled-up one-hundred-dollar bill in his hand. Roland looked at the money and chuckled.

“Couldn’t have used a one?”

“You gotta do this right. It’s all about luxury, baby.”

He loved her accent. It sounded like home dipped in honey. That voice of hers could convince him to do just about anything. Not that he often needed convincing.

“All right. So, three each?”

“I like your enthusiasm, but let’s start with one.”

He looked up at her, pulled her in for a kiss, and then snorted the nearest line. The high was almost instant. Pupils blown, reality shifted, heart pounding. He looked at Pamela in wonder as she snorted her own line. She even made that look pretty, he thought, and when she looked back at him, she clapped a hand over her mouth, muffling a raucous laugh.

“My God, look at you,” she whispered.

“I feel amazing.”

“I bet you do. This is the good shit. Best in the world.”

“I had no idea you lived such a sexy, dangerous double life,” he growled in her ear, the scent of hairspray and perfume filling his nostrils.

Pamela laughed. “I don’t know about sexy, but it certainly is dangerous.”

“That sounds exciting.”

“Oh, baby, you have no idea.”

This was a whole new side of Pamela.
