Chapter 8:

“Well hello ladies how are you two doing tonight? It has been a while since I have seen you Crystal. Why is it that you have been hiding from me my sweet? More importantly why have you been hiding this beautiful specimen of womanhood from me?”

“This is my sister Kira. She is visiting from my hometown.”

“Oh yes, Sioux City, Iowa.”

“You remembered that, I am impressed Merik.”

“I remember everything my sweet princess, even if I would rather forget it. So tell me Kira how are you enjoying my city as well as my little bar? I can see by yours and your sister’s pupils that you both have a head full of acid at the moment. Tell me, are you enjoying the veil being lifted from your eyes, how are you enjoying walking between worlds?”

“I am having a great time here in New Orleans as well as here in your bar. This bar is really cool and yes I am tripping balls right now. In fact I am fairly certain I saw a vampire drinking a guy’s blood, but hey I could be wrong. I do love all of the art in here though. It’s all old, real old, I can tell.”

I looked over at some of the paintings on the walls. I could see that they were all moving now, all alive if you will.

“You are right Kira the art is very old. Most of this art is no less than two hundred years old. Some of it is a bit newer but none of it is newer than the Civil War era. I love folk art, even more so I love the old slave art. Many have tried to hide and even go as far as to destroy these old works. In my eyes this is sacrilege, an a front to all those who created it. You must remember that this art was created at a time that it was illegal for the artist to do so. A slave would be beaten, possibly killed for creating these master pieces. The slave masters were afraid of the ancient African imagery, more so the African religions. They did what all those in power often do, they destroyed what they feared and did not understand. The needed to destroy any sense of culture that the people once had. The only identity that they wanted them to know as that of their plantation. They got away with this mostly by using Christianity. If you kill and destroy in the name of God you do so without any repercussion. You know Kira each and every piece of art holds a piece of the soul of its creator within it? You already know this though, you are an artist, yet for whatever reason you are afraid to show your art to anyone. This reality makes me sad, yet intrigued.”

“Wow Merik you think that you really know me don’t you?”

“Am I wrong Kira?”

“In all honesty no you are not wrong Merik.”

“I so seldom am.”

“You are defiantly cocky I will tell you that.
