As they approached the corridor which led to the kitchens and Sister Ella’s room, Seamus held up his hand. His sharp eye had spotted the footprints.

“Were these made by one of your nuns?” he asked Mother Mary.

“Oh, no, no we keep these corridors spotlessly clean,” she demurred.

“OK, we need to keep this area as clear as possible of traffic. I appreciate you have to use it, but please can you get your sisters to avoid the footsteps until we’ve finished with the forensics.”

“Yes, certainly, I will do that, don’t you worry. Anyway, shall we continue to the scene of the crime?”

“Yes, by all means.” Seamus wasn’t sure he wanted to see the scene of the crime judging by the bloody footprints, however, it had to be done.

They walked to the side of the trail of footprints and followed Mother Mary down the corridor again until they arrived in front of a closed door. Mother Mary took a deep breath.

“It’s in there,” she said, “I won’t go in, if you don’t mind, I’ve seen it and once is enough.”

“For sure,” Seamus nodded with understanding, pulling out blue latex gloves from his pocket to put them on. The others did the same. Then he reached for the door handle and slowly opened the door.

Nothing had really prepared them for the sight which met their eyes, let alone the stench of blood and death.

“Jesus H fucking Christ on a fucking bike, what the fucking fuck!” said Seamus without thinking.

“Fuck me, Seamus, I’ve never seen anything like it my life,” said O’Rorden echoing his sentiments. He wasn’t prone to swearing at all, thus underlining the shock of the scene before them.

“Fok my soos n porn stere. Oh my Fucking God,” said Nikki. Nobody wanted to ask her what the Afrikaans phrase was, it sounded very rude.

“Excuse my colleagues,” O’Flynn said wryly to Mother Mary.

“Oh no, it’s quite alright, I think Jesus wouldn’t mind at all, all things considered. I said a little bit of profanity myself, to be honest. To myself, you understand.”

“Yes, of course,” said O’Flynn keeping a straight face.

“Well,” said Seamus recovering his compose, “It looks like the murderer has excelled themselves last night. Beating, decapitation, and possibly more.”

“They’ve made a fucking mess, alright, I’ve been to an abattoir and it wasn’t anywhere near as bad as this,” Nikki said.

They moved just inside the doorway of the room, to get a better look.

“I think that’s what she used to give the nun the hiding,” said Nikki pointing out the cane.

“Let’s leave it, for the forensics, we won’t touch anything.”

“What it looks like, if you don’t mind me saying,” said O’Rorden, “Is that the killer left in haste, perhaps cutting off the victim’s head took them by surprise?”

“Very possibly, judging by the trail of footprints,” Seamus agreed. He tore himself away from the awful sight in front of them. They needed to get organised. “OK, Kathy can you get the Tech Team down here for the forensics, and the pathologist. Get a uniformed officer to mind the crime scene.
