“I can’t tell you how wonderful it felt to me to be across the Missouri at last,” Detective Boswell later told me. “Stepping out onto that far shore filled me with a sense of liberation, a sensation of being free to stretch my muscles and do my duty without being watched or hindered. It was as if the West began there on the bank of the river. Omaha seemed ready to deal everyone a fresh hand in the game. My only regret was that crossing the river took me farther away from news of my new friend, Elisabeth Greene.”

While John Day was helping Kane Kelly into the buggy, Mr. Boswell paid the boatman and thanked him for his service. As the money was changing hands, he realized the boatman had been standing there throughout the conversation and was now aware of their new plan. The detective cursed himself for not speaking with the associate in private. And now he had no choice but to let the boatman return to Council Bluffs where he would no doubt head for a saloon to drink and talk about his evening’s work. Damn. It probably wouldn’t matter, but damn it anyway.
