This afternoon, I can no longer take it. I sneak outside for a short walk with Nya. Dr. Harrison assigned me to modified bedrest. I am to limit my time not in bed or the recliner to two hours a day. Two hours of bathroom time, showers, preparing meals, and that is about it. I’ve watched mindless daytime TV, visited the movie channels, binge-watched Netflix and Hulu, and can take it no more. I need fresh air. I vow three blocks down and back is all I will walk and at a very slow pace.

Nya’s excitement at finally walking during the day with me is contagious. She darts right and left as I leisurely stroll on the sidewalk. I notice Isaac’s truck in Anna’s driveway. As I near, he waves me over to him. Isaac has never been my favorite person. I can’t imagine what he and Anna are going through so, I decide to approach for a moment.

“Can I ask a favor?” Isaac reluctantly asks. I sense he understands my hesitation based on our past interactions. “I need to grab a few items from our house. I would really appreciate it if you walk with me and witness what I remove. I don’t want Anna to claim to her lawyer I took items I shouldn’t have and didn’t.”

“I guess I can spare a few minutes.” I agree. “I’m supposed to be on bedrest, so I can’t help long.”

Isaac promises it will only take five minutes. As I begin to squat, he quickly scoops Nya up and places her in my arms. I am in shock. Did Isaac, Mr. Male Chauvinistic Pig, just sense the difficulty I have bending at my size and help me? Wow. I must be in an alternate universe.

As I follow him, Nya in my arms, to the master bedroom to fill his suitcase, I take in his appearance. He is very unkempt—it is easy to see he is suffering during this separation. His hair needs washed and cut, his stubble is a little longer than is in style, his clothes are wrinkled, and the dark circles under his eyes announce his lack of sleep.

As he removes clothes from the closet, throwing them into his suitcase, Isaac claims Anna has a new lover and will be moving out in the next month. At that time, he will move back into the house. “Seems futile to pack anymore items, but I need them for work.”

When the suitcase is full, we walk out the front door. “Why don’t you come over for a drink?” I invite, even though I can’t indulge with him. “Jackson will be home soon, you can stay and visit while I go to Maria’s to visit their new baby.”

Hours later, I return after having my baby fix until the twins arrive later this week. I find Isaac has passed out in the master bedroom. Jackson meets me in the kitchen informing me he had to insist Isaac stay and wanted him to be close to a bathroom in case he pukes.
