8. THE PRISON YARD

The expanse of patchy, burnt grass from the beating sun paralleled the overall feel of the place. Beaten up wooden benches were scattered around and screwed into the ground. What was once a runner's track ran the distance of one side. There was at least a twelve-feet high barbed wire fence surrounding it, setting the place off. Or rather, setting them off from the rest of civilization. Stone didn't like anything about it. Not at all. But it was better than staying inside. She cursed herself, not for the first time, for getting herself into such a predicament.

Alone, she walked over to an empty bench and hoped like hell things stayed that way. She didn't want anyone near her. She wasn't looking to make friends, allies, enemies, or anything in between. Her cellmate Sandrine was bad enough. It was like she hadn't been around people in so long, she pounced as soon as she met Stone. It wouldn't have been so bad, either, if she wasn't so sweet. She was like sugar on steroids.

Looking up, Stone let the warm rays from above wash over her. It felt good. It was about the only thing that did at the moment. She closed her eyes and laid her head back on the bench. She tried furiously to calm her thoughts, stop her mind from spinning. It wasn't going to do her any good to be so fixated on this hell hole.

Clearing her mind, she felt herself drift off to a better place. Anywhere but here would've been fine, but where she chose to make her better place was interesting—Suit's kitchen. She had felt so good being with him, sharing his space, his bed, and getting to peel back some of his layers. Stone didn't realize it at the time, but it was the happiest she had been in a while, even given the conditions that brought him into her life. Maybe she was a masochist, but she missed it. Too bad she didn't realize it when she was there. It was peculiar how she only came to appreciate what she had when she didn't have it anymore. It made her human though, Stone supposed.

A whistle blew in the distance and Stone's eyes flew open, all her better thoughts gone. She scanned the area and found two women fighting in the northeast quadrant. A guard worked to break it up. Stone watched in amazement over the whole thing as it unfolded. Never in her life did she suspect she'd be around such—

"Hey, you're new, aren't you?" A woman came over and kicked Stone's shin, stealing her attention from the fight.

Stone glared at the woman with a rat's nest for hair and dark circles around her eyes. She looked like she was high and it was little wonder she could form a sentence.

"Yeah, so, what?"

"I like to meet the newbies," she said, and pushed Stone over to sit next to her.

Stone held back a low growl in the back of her throat.
