‘Honey, I’d like to introduce you to Marcus Rose.’

A large black man, impeccably dressed, extended his hand towards mine. I shook his hand, and he nearly crushed my hand with his vice-like grip.

‘Uh, hello,’ I stammered. ‘I’m Eric.’

I had just gotten back from the bathroom at a five-star hotel, leaving my wife Stacy waiting for me at the bar. When I returned, this huge man was standing next to her, his arm draped around her waist as they spoke very intimately to each other. I didn’t like it.

‘He was just checking up on us. Did you know he is the Marcus Rose? From Rose Industries?’

‘What are you saying?’ I said, not putting two-and-two together quite yet.

‘It means I own this hotel,’ he interjected with his low, baritone voice. ‘Among others. I was asking your lovely wife if everything was in order. The customer is king, after all.’

‘How amazing is that?!’ My wife said, nearly jumping up and down with barely contained excitement.

I was annoyed to see Marcus’s hand was still on my wife’s lower back as he stared at me with his commanding dark brown eyes. She was wearing a stunning black dress with an open back, and his hand was no-doubt resting on her exposed skin.

‘That’s nice,’ I said, lying through my teeth. ‘Everything is perfectly fine, thank you. You ready to go, Stace?’

My wife looked back at me, wide-eyed. ‘What’s the rush, dear? This man is a billionaire! How amazing is that?’

Marcus shrugged like it was no big deal, but I knew the moment before I walked up to them he must have been bragging about his immense power and riches to her.

‘I was just telling your wife about the gorgeous view from the penthouse on the top floor, would you like to join me up there?’ Marcus asked me directly, staring deeply into my eyes, never breaking contact for even a second.

‘Please, honey?’ My wife begged like a child. ‘I want to see!’

‘Uhm, sure,’ I said, completely unsure of this course of action.

‘Excellent,’ Marcus smiled, showing off his perfect teeth. ‘This way.’

And just like that he guided my wife to the elevator, his hand still on her back. I walked after them, trailing behind, an ominous feeling overtaking me as I watched my wife’s small frame standing next to this giant of a man, his dark ebony skin contrasting erotically with her lily white complexion.

I knew I shouldn’t let him take us to his room. Nothing good could come of it. Stopping this was easy. All I had to do was grab her hand and pull her out of that elevator, tell Marcus I just remembered we had a reservation somewhere, and that would be it.

I was standing in front of the elevator, trying to muster up the right words, when my wife grabbed my hand and pulled me in. Marcus swiped his keycard and instantly the doors closed behind me, the elevator beginning its rapid rise. The moment had passed me by.
