Chapter 27

Avery stared out the window as the rain whipped in every direction. "I wonder if there's a storm where they are?"

“Probably.” Charla finished the dishes and hung the tea towel to dry.

Blue paced the room and checked out the front and back windows every few minutes.

“Something wrong?” Ralph asked.

“Red hasn’t checked in.”

The lights flickered off, on, and off again.

"This is not a test." Blue said. "Go to your room with Ralph."

Ralph stood so fast, he knocked his chair over. "Follow me."

Chills raced up Avery's back.

Something was wrong and every part of her body told her to run— not walk.

They followed behind Ralph as he climbed the stairs. Avery looked over her shoulder and Blue had a hand gun out. A crash from the back door made Avery jump and she hurried to catch up with Ralph and Charla as they ducked into the bedroom.

They heard a gun shot, and Charla screamed.

"Quiet now." Ralph closed the door behind them.

Avery went to the crate and grabbed Louie in his blankets. He licked Avery's chin, and she held him tight to her chest.

"Stand by the window." Ralph gestured with his gun, and they stood with their backs against the wall.

Ralph aimed his gun at the door, and they heard another shot fired before Ralph turned to them.

"Push the beds against this door when I leave. You go out that window,” he reached into his pocket and pulled out a key chain, "just take the car and go. Don't look back."

Avery took them and nodded.

Charla grabbed one of the mattresses and pulled it to the door. Avery set Louie down and grabbed the other side to the door.

Ralph opened the door, slipped out, and dragged it against the door. As they stacked the second mattress, another shot rang out.

"We should go now." Charla whispered.

Avery nodded. "Open the window."

Charla went to the window and Avery grabbed Louie. As Charla struggled to take the screen out of the window, Avery heard someone on the staircase.

And whistling.

"It's him."

The words caught in her throat, and tears formed in her eyes.

Charla started to shake as she yanked at the screen. It came lose in her hands and crashed to the floor.

The whistling stopped outside the room.

Avery held Louie out to Charla. "Go first. I'll buy us time."

Charla shook her head, and pushed Avery to the open window. "Go. I'll be right behind you."

Avery started to climb through the opening and realized how hard it would be with Louie in her arms.

"Uncle Arnie?" Charla called as Avery slipped out the window, and the words made her stomach churn.

She wanted Charla to follow behind her, but she knew she needed more time to get down from the roof and start the car. She slid toward the edge with Louie tucked in her arms. They were soaked by the time her legs dangled off the edge.

She couldn't hear Charla’s voice anymore as she looked down at the ground and willed herself to jump.
