Every time she closed her eyes, Emily saw Lizzie Knollys’ limp form sprawled upon the packed-earth floor of her house, unmoving. She had not slept since and could think of little else. She knew her tirade against Seb had been unjust, but she felt so at a loss. She had told him she was fearful for Gabriel but, in truth, she was far more fearful for herself. Hugging the amber to her heart, it seemed Gabriel’s affections – his love – were all she had left to rely upon and now he would have to leave because Seb had unmasked that devil, Underwood. Why could he not leave well alone? Who cared if some wretched dead Dutchman had justice or no? What about the living?

Emily buried her face in the pillows. The living – or mayhap the dead – worried her most.

If anything had happened to Lizzie Knollys – and not for a moment did she believe the idle bitch had run away, as Beattie insisted – Seb was so concerned for truth and justice, he would cast her out; abandon her, she knew. Damn him for being so righteous and dutiful. Curse him for his constant upholding of the law. The Devil take him for putting virtuous behaviour before love.

She ought to have listened to Dame Ellen and never wed a man who found more joy in a foolish manuscript than he did the marriage bed. He should take holy orders, join a monastery, have his head shaved and wear sackcloth and ashes. Aye, that would suit him better than being a husband. This was all his fault...
