The lark was singing his carol once more, high in the vault of Heaven. I was thus reminded how little a man’s passing – even one of such presence as Cousin Luke – affected the world. Nature continued, wonderful and carefree, no matter what heartache men suffered. And there was Gawain, gambolling like a spring lamb up The Street, towards the church. Naught daunted his delight in living either. He buried his nose in a clump of daisies, sneezing on their pollen and disturbing a bumble bee.

‘Come, Gawain, can you not be a little more solemn this day?’ I chided him.

He sneezed again, relieving himself upon a stand of cow parsley afore chasing after a white butterfly in a cloud of dust, so it seemed he could not.

Everyone else was still at work in the hayfield, but I would return to my abandoned mural. I was displeased at the remembrance of the wasted azurite pigment of yesterday.
