Sun stared at the bottom of the page, tried to keep her eyes from lifting back up to the horror contained in the pale grey pencil words. She had wanted to find a good man in her uncle, a facsimile of her father. But, the more she read, the more she travelled away from that ideal.

Eventually, she put the book down on the wide mattress beside her and reached for the light. She plunged the room into darkness and turned to lay on her side.

She thought of her father and the implicit admiration he’d had for his brother; her gentle father with so much bark and so little bite. She began to cry.
