Looking back, I see the rich variety of my musical collaborators. Bob Dylan was a poet; words came first for him, and in the early, folkie years of his career, it was key that those words have political and cultural bite. Elvis Costello, born thirteen years after Dylan, made music that was also lyric-driven, but so many of those lyrics were fused to such high-energy music that the songs came at you like a physical force. David Byrne, a contemporary of Costello’s, found in music a way to merge fashion, community, technology, and a kind of urban good cheer. Billy Joel’s great gift is his common touch—an ability to tell stories about the under-the-surface poetry in ordinary lives.
