Chapter 18: A Thing Called Love

Saturday, June 1973

When Maggie walked into the White Swan public house Rob was in the process of laughing in that rather ostentatious way drunken people tend to do. Rufus had just told a joke and he had a very skilled and well-honed way of delivering a punch line that invariably sent both Toby and Rob into fits of sustained giggles. However, on seeing Maggie standing in the doorway, Rob stopped laughing, leapt to his feet and walked over to greet her, unsure of what mood she was likely to be in. Maggie allowed him to give her a peck on her cheek, which he thought was at least a tiny bit encouraging.

‘What do you want to drink, love?’

‘Nothing for me ta. Just wanted a bit of a chat.’

‘Okay.’

‘Outside.’

Rob looked a bit unsure. ‘Okay. Just let me finish my beer.

‘All right. I’ll be waiting.’

Maggie left the bar without acknowledging Toby and Rufus. Rob returned to the table, picked up his pint glass and drained it.

‘Sorry, lads, I’ve got to go and have a word with Maggie. Bit of a situation apparently. See you later. Wish me luck,’ said Rob, raising his eyebrows.

‘Totally under the thumb just so you can get a bit of nooky tonight! By the way, you’ll need to hurry if you want another pint – the lovely June’s about to call time,’ said Toby, as Rob serpentined his inebriated way to the door.
