Chapter 18

“Detective, let’s start on the last conclusion you made that you just testified about. The alleged murder weapon. You said Mr. Dowd was shot with a Glock 19, correct?”

“That’s correct.”

“Would you describe that as a unique weapon?”

“Unique?”

“In the sense they’re hard to find or rare.”

“No. It’s not a unique weapon.”

“In fact, you own a Glock 19, don’t you?”

“Yes, I do.”

“How many homicide cases have you investigated in the last five years that involved gun violence?”

“I can’t say for sure.”

I paused. Eric sat on the bench just behind Jeanie. He was directly responsible for the research I was about to lay down.

“Was it sixteen?”

“That sounds about right.”

“Do you know how many of those sixteen cases involving gun violence also involved the use of Glock 19?”

“Not off the top of my head, but I bet you’re about to tell me.”

“I am. Would it surprise you if the number is eleven?”

“No, that wouldn’t surprise me.”

“So, is it fair to say that the Glock 19 is a common weapon?”

“Yes.”

“It’s one of the most common types of handgun purchased in the United States. Did you know that?”

“I can’t say I knew it for a fact. But no, it doesn’t surprise me. If you’d asked me to guess, that would have been my guess.”

“Fair enough. And you never found the gun used to shoot Terrence Dowd, did you?”

“We did not. No.”

“So you cannot say whether the bullet and shell casing retrieved from Terrence’s vehicle came from a Glock 19 registered to Farrah Sibley, can you?”

“I can’t say that, no. But that was only one piece of evidence in this case.”

“It’s not evidence at all because you don’t have the gun, do you?”

“Objection, asked and answered,” Bailey said.

“Let’s move on, Ms. Leary. You’ve made your point.”

“Of course,” I said. “But Detective, you’ve recited a list of suspicions you had. Your evidence. The statements from Ms. Sibley’s coworkers. The cell phone data, texts and voicemails. But you have no physical evidence tying Farrah Sibley to the scene of Terrence Dowd’s shooting, do you?”

“She was in the building at the time of the shooting. This we know from the security footage of when she left. The data from her workstation. Her cell phone pinged the tower closest to the Belz Building.”

“The tower with a half-a-mile radius,” I said.

“Is that a question?” Bailey jumped up.

“I’ll ask one,” I said. “Detective, you executed a search warrant of Farrah Sibley’s home, correct?”

“Yes.”

“You didn’t find any physical evidence tying her to the crime scene incident to that search, did you?”

“No.”

“No bloody clothes.”

“No.”

“No murder weapon.”

“No.”

“And when you arrested her, you found no gun residue on her hands, did you?”

“Well, she was arrested a few days after the shooting, so I’m not sure that makes a difference.”

“But you questioned her within a few hours of the shooting. You didn’t see any blood on her, did you?”

“No.”

“No signs of injury?”

“No.”

“Let’s talk about Lionel Harriman, then,” I said. “This investigation isn’t the first time you ever met him, is it?”

“No.”

“You were personally acquainted with Mr. Harriman before this case, weren’t you?”

“We are friendly, yes.
