I hate this.

It was hard for Nathalie to be missing the vital information from her past to help her make good decisions for her future. She walked into her house, feeling a headache coming on. She had been replaying Thorn’s words all day, analyzing them to death, but she still didn’t know what to believe.

She walked into the kitchen and smiled at her mother who was over the stove making spaghetti from the smell of it.

“Oh good, you’re home,” her mother said excitedly. “We need to settle on the centerpieces.” Nathalie sat on the stool at the counter between them as her mom grabbed a stack of pictures and splayed them out in front of her. “I like this one,” she said, pointing at a picture of a big tacky floral centerpiece.

Nathalie just stared blankly at them as her mother rambled on about the different arrangements. She couldn’t have cared less about centerpieces at that moment.

“Who’s Thorn?” she spat out.

Her mother froze, stopping her rambling mid-sentence. She went very still as she stared at Nathalie with panicked eyes. “I don’t know that name,” she said. The shakiness in her voice was giving her away.

“Mom,” Nathalie said, giving her a serious look.

Her mom’s shoulders dropped as she sighed. Her face softened as her lips pinched closed. “He was your boyfriend growing up.”

Nathalie’s heart started pounding as she stared at her mom with a dazed look. So, it was true.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” she asked, narrowing her eyes on her mother. Her voice was thick with betrayal. “You shouldn’t have kept that from me.”

Her mother’s eyes dropped to the counter as her shoulders hunched forward. “I didn’t know what to do, Nathalie,” she said. She looked upset with wet eyes and a trembling chin. “I was as lost as you. Imagine watching the light of your life lying lifeless in a coma for three years. I went to the hospital every day for three years and sat beside you for hours, reading and talking to you and you never responded. You never opened your eyes. I don’t wish that on any parent.” She shook her head as the tears started flowing. “I prayed every night for you to wake up and then one day you did.”

Her mother took a deep breath and wiped her eyes with the back of her hand. “I thought it was a miracle but it turned out to be even harder than before. You didn’t remember anything. I was so thrilled to see you and when I tried to give you a hug, you pushed me away and called for a nurse. You screamed that there was a stranger in your room.”

Nathalie shifted on her stool, feeling guilt wash over her. “I’m sorry, Mom,” she whispered.

“No,” her mother said, reaching across the counter and touching the back of Nathalie’s hand. “It wasn’t your fault. None of this was your fault. It was just a shitty thing that happened.’

“The doctor had said that the less you knew about your past, the better,” her mother explained, fighting to hold back her tears.
