Three in the morning, and I’ve yet to fall asleep and stay that way for more than ten minutes at a time. Every time I do, another thought jerks me awake. This instance, my mind is focused on the last ten killings and more specifically on the times of death.

The dates and times are scattered across the calendar without rhyme or reason. At least not upon first glance. But then a pattern emerges from the chaos.

I reach over and shake Seth. “Hey, are you awake?”

Seth groans. “Guess I am now.”

“Good.” I switch on the nightstand lamp and sit up.

Seth rolls over and squints at me. “Now, I really am, but the question as to why I should be remains.”

“There’s a pattern to the killings, Seth. They’re not random.”

“Meaning what? They’re all connected? We determined the killer was a vigilante.”

“No, I’m talking about the dates. There’s a pattern. One month, five days, and several hours between each killing.”

He sits up and rubs his eyes, now more alert. “Show me.”

I grab a pen and a pad of paper from the nightstand drawer and write out the ten dates. “Here, take a look.”
