CHAPTER FIVE
âI think I just broke up with Noah.â
Tears streaming down her face, Mandy ran into Helenaâs arms.
âWhat? No!â Helena pulled her into an embrace, and Mandy cried until there were no tears left to cry.
As they sat together in the living room, Joseph came in to find out what all the ruckus was about. âWhat I saw last night was not a couple about to break up,â he said quietly. âYouâve got it all wrong.â
âI agree,â Helena said. âWhat I witnessed was a young man very much in love. And you didnât seem too unhappy either.â
Mandy looked from one to the other of them. âDo you think so,â she asked between sobs. âWe had a fight. Today. And he walked out.â Tears began to stream down her face once more. Helena handed her a box of tissues.
âWalked out?â Joseph asked. âOn my little girl? The nerve of him!â
It wasnât his fault. Mandy knew it was all her doing. Why hadnât she kept her mouth shut?
She knew exactly what had happened. Noah was getting under her skin and she didnât like it. Didnât like it one little bit.
Sheâd gotten scared.
Scared that maybe things had gotten serious. Had become real.
Thatâs not what she had planned.
Her idea was theyâd pretend to be together to keep her parents off her back. When did it all go so wrong?
âDo you love him?â Helenaâs voice broke through her wayward thoughts. âMandy. Do you love him? Answer me honestly, sweetheart.â
Mandy nodded. Sheâd known it from the first day theyâd met. From the moment theyâd touched. Sheâd been lying to herself all this time and didnât even realize it.
âAnd youâve told him, right?â Both her parents sat on the edge of their seats waiting for her to answer.
âI, uh,â
âMandy. Did you tell him?â
She shook her head and looked down into her lap. âNo.â The words came out so quietly she barely heard them herself.
âOh Mandy. Really?â
Without her permission, her tears began to stream down her face again.
âYou may not know this,â her mother told her quietly, âBut I didnât like your father much when I first met him.â
âHang onâ¦â Joseph interrupted.
âShush Joseph,â Helena told him. âBut I loved him from the moment I saw him. Mandy, look at me, sweetheart.â
Mandy looked up and stared at her mother through her tears.
âAre you willing to let him go? Thatâs the question you have to ask yourself.â
Mandy nodded knowing Helena was right. Was she willing to let him go?
âWhat I saw last night was two people who cared very much for each other.â Helena patted her hand as she spoke gently. âTwo people who were very much in love.â
Mandy couldnât hold back. She had to tell them the truth. âI did it for you both.â
Helena looked confused, along with Joseph. âDid what?â
She sniffed. âNoah was to be my pretend boyfriend.â Her mother stared at her in shock. âSo I could bring someone to the party,â she said quickly.
Her parents both sat in silence.
âBut somehow everything changed. He is so kind and caring,â she wiped her nose with a tissue.
